The Basics

The Van Gogh Museum is comprehensive yet not overwhelmingly vast; once inside, you can experience it in two to four hours. Touring the museum with a professional art historian, either on a group or private tour, is a great way to learn more about the master’s life and works. Many such tours also include a skip-the-line ticket, which allows you to bypass the crowds and head right inside.

Cruising to Van Gogh
It was amazing to see his paintings, as well as the paintings of other artists that gave him inspiration. Being able to read his letters to his close family and friends gives great insight to his inner turmoil, as well as how much he loved them. Definitely worth the trip. The cruise was informative as well and very relaxing after a long day of traveling around and sightseeing.

Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam & 1-Hour Canal Cruise
The museum is worth the entrance. The problem is the Canal cruise is not quite near the Museum. When we got to the place we got into a very long line to take the cruise that was more than an hour., it was already dark when we jump into the cruise, it enclosed, you cant really take good picture. So, the canal cruise is not really worth it.

Paola was a wonderful guide. Her enthusiasm for the artist and his works was so evident and she really made each piece come alive. She answered our questions so thoughtfully. I would certainly recommend her. The museum was a great addition to our vacation.

Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam & 1-Hour Canal Cruise
The Van Gogh Museum is first-rate. Such an amazing collection! I should have researched the cruise. I didn't realize it was so far from the museum. As I had an evening appointment, I did not have time to travel to and from the cruise location. So, sadly, I forfeited that.

Skip-the-line Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam Private Guided Tour
This museum tour was our favorite tour. We spent 4 days in Amsterdam in August. The tour guide was excellent and made the Van Gogh Museum come alive. We enjoyed skipping the long line to get in and getting personalized info on the works and life of this famous artist.

Selina Vean was absolutely fabulous. So informative and fun. What a great way to spend a day. She was very well educated on both museums and art history in general. Put together a great tour and the history behind each masterpiece.

Anita, our tour guide works at the Van Gogh Museum and had so much knowledge! The story of Van Gogh's life was told with her experience and historical background (some of her own opinions) which was second to none - an excellent tour. Thank you.

Ciara was our guide and she was absolutely fantastic! She brought great energy, passion and education to the tour. Her knowledge and intricacies of Van Gogh, his life and art was superb. We really enjoyed this tour with Ciara and appreciate the education and insights she gave.

The Van Gogh Museum’s Notable Works

The Van Gogh Museum houses the world's largest collection of artworks by Vincent van Gogh, including famous canvases like Sunflowers, Almond Blossom, The Bedroom, and The Potato Eaters. Through van Gogh’s paintings, the museum chronicles the artist’s journey from Holland (where his work was dark and somber) to Paris and the south of France; of special note is the second-floor wall, which displays 18 paintings produced during this time. Another wing, set partly underground, showcases temporary exhibits by van Gogh and other artists.
